Innovation has always been at the heart of our business

Yesterday's daring technology and strokes of genius have given way to the most advanced technologies in research and development.

These technologies have enabled us to improve tyre performance and bring you even more enjoyment and safety when you get behind the handlebars of your motorcycle.

Key dates in innovation

  • 1970

    Riders Jack Findlay and Guido Mandracci try out the very first slick tyres on the Misano circuit.

  • 1983

    Michelin's first victory in the Dakar rally with Hubert Auriol on a BMW. A perforated foam insert known as "Bib Mousse" replaces the inner tube.

  • 1984

    Michelin tests its first radial tyres in the Moto Grand Prix.

  • 1987

    Michelin puts its first radial tyre for mass-produced motorcycles on sale: MICHELIN A59X / M59X.

  • 1992

    Michelin introduces 100% silica-charged rubber compound onto the competition scene as a result of Michelin group's fundamental research.

  • 1995

    First dual compound tyre in the GP 500. MICHELIN's 2CT dual compound technology will enable the company to widen the gap between itself and its competitors.

  • 2005

    MICHELIN Power Race is the first 2CT hypersport tyre with different rubber compounds on the crown and shoulders of the tyre. It is the first racing tyre authorised for use on the roads, the seal of approval for its dual compound construction.

  • 2009

    AST (Asymmetric Technology) allows the MICHELIN Power One Competition 16.5" to become the first tyre in its class to take into account the differing strain on each side of the tyre, depending on whether the circuit has more left-hand or right-hand turns.

  • 2011

    MICHELIN Pilot Road 3 is the first motorcycle tyre to feature XST tread technology to guarantee unrivalled grip on wet surfaces.

  • 2014

    2AT (Dual Angle Technology) makes its debut on Pilot Road 4 GT tyres, combining the performance and quality characteristics of radial and bias tyres. It is aimed at heavy, high-performance touring bikes.
